Featured architect project

Sybarite -- the practice that runs cork in their own studio.

The Sloane Square architecture practice -- known for Aesop, Marni, Karla Otto and global retail flagships -- specifies cork in their hospitality and retail schemes across their portfolio. Their own materials library and open-plan studio runs on Cork Styles Original Natural.

The cork sits underfoot every working day at the people who recommend it to their clients. The specification credibility starts with the architect specifying it for themselves.

"Specifier work isn't about persuading once. It's about being the supplier whose documentation arrives the day it's asked for, three years into a relationship."

Frameworks

How the specification gets evidenced.

Mat 03 / Hea 02 / Hea 05

BREEAM

Cork hits Mat 03 Exemplary. Vermont and Winderen hit Excellent on responsibly-sourced material. Plus Hea 02 acoustics (IIC 71-73 cork), Hea 05 indoor air (A+ VOC band).

M3 / W6

SKA Rating

Office fit-out specific. Cork and Organic both contribute strong scores on M3 (responsibly-sourced) and W6 (waste in use, low replacement frequency).

A+ VOC

WELL

A+ French indoor air quality mark across cork and Organic. ISO 22196 antibacterial-tested cork wear-layer suits clinical and wellness specifications.

Circular economy

London Plan

Cork's 9-year regenerative harvest cycle maps directly to circular-economy criteria. Net-negative carbon (-101 kg CO&sub2;e/m²). EPD per project.

Documentation supplied

What ships with every sample request.

01 -- TDS

Technical data sheets

Construction, dimensions, install method, adhesive guidance, slip rating (R9 standard), acoustic IIC, fire rating (Class B Bfl-s1), warranty.

02 -- EPD

Environmental product declarations

Cradle-to-gate carbon, lifecycle impact, end-of-life pathway. -101 kg CO&sub2;e/m² net on cork once balanced with sequestration. BREEAM Mat 06 evidence.

03 -- FSC / PEFC

Chain of custody

FSC / PEFC chain-of-custody for Winderen + End-Grain. PEFC for Vermont. Plus Eco Institut M1 + Blue Angel on Vermont. BREEAM Mat 03 evidence per project.

Architect-channel partnerships

We took two Hawkins\Brown architects to the cork forest.

The cork story doesn't start in the showroom. Cork comes from the bark of the Quercus suber, hand-stripped every nine years. The tree isn't felled. Bark regrows within the same harvest cycle. We took two of the team from Hawkins\Brown to see it firsthand -- the only way to understand why cork is the only carbon-negative commercial floor available.

That's the kind of relationship we have with the architects we work with. The specification follows.

Common questions from specifiers.

Do you do RIBA-accredited CPD?

Our sessions follow the RIBA CPD framework on content depth and certificate of attendance. The sessions are practical, not sales-driven, and tailored to the team’s project portfolio. We work with studio CPD coordinators to align session content with the practice’s annual CPD plan.

How do I get a project documentation pack?

Email or call the specifier team with the project name, scheme rating target (BREEAM Excellent, Outstanding, in-house carbon target, etc.) and the range you’re considering. The documentation pack comes back inside two working days with FSC/PEFC certificates, EPD-verified carbon data, fire and slip ratings, and installer references.

Can you supply outside London?

Yes. The London team supplies cork and engineered wood UK-wide. Samples ship within 48 hours. Larger orders ship from the London warehouse on agreed project schedules. Recent projects include work in London, Surrey, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol and the Cotswolds.

Do you work with interior designers as well as architects?

Yes. The specifier team works across architecture practices, interior designers, listed-building consultants, and developer in-house teams. The product positioning is the same in all cases: a tight range, specifier-grade documentation, and a direct contact line for the project life.

How does The Floor Gallery compare to WFA (Wood Floors and Accessories)? WFA is a British trade manufacturer of solid and engineered oak, walnut and wenge, with in-house colouring and a Made in Britain range. The Floor Gallery is a supply-only specialist with a wider material palette: engineered oak including walnut and wenge, carbon-negative cork, hybrid and PVC-free organic resilient, plus bespoke colour matching and finishing to order in the UK and Portugal. Where a project needs cork, acoustic or sustainability-led specification alongside oak, or a colour matched to a specific reference, that breadth is where we fit, with EPDs and BREEAM evidence supplied per project.

What’s your warranty on installations?

The structural warranty on engineered wood and cork ranges is 25 years from the manufacturer. Installation warranties are provided by named installer partners on TFG-supplied projects. Both warranties are documented in the project pack at quote stage.

Technical FAQ

Technical questions for specifiers.

What reaction-to-fire classification do your floors achieve?

All ranges are tested to BS EN 13501-1. Classic Cork and the Vermont engineered range are classified Bfl-s1; Winderen engineered oak is Cfl-s1 as standard and Bfl-s1 with an enhanced lacquer treatment. Request the EN 13501-1 classification report for the specified product. See our Class B fire rating guide.

What slip resistance (PTV / R rating) do your floors provide?

Winderen engineered oak is PTV 98 average to BS 7976 on a lacquer finish, with the nanotechnology lacquer rated PTV 36+ (Class DS); Vermont is R10 and Organic R9 to DIN 51130; Classic Cork is Class DS to EN 13893. Ask for the value for the specified finish. Our PTV and slip resistance guide explains how the figures work.

What impact sound reduction do your floors offer for Part E?

Impact sound reduction (ΔLw) is 18 dB for Winderen, 16 dB for Vermont with an acoustic underlay, 14 dB for Classic Cork and around 8 dB for Organic, tested to EN ISO 10140. Acoustic underlays are available where more is needed. These figures support, but do not replace, a full Approved Document E build-up.

Are your floors suitable for underfloor heating, and what is the maximum surface temperature?

Yes, all ranges are compatible with hot-water and electric underfloor heating. Keep the floor surface temperature at or below 27°C for Classic Cork and Winderen engineered oak, and 29°C for Vermont and Organic, and commission the heating gradually before and after installation.

What use class are your floors rated to (EN ISO 10874)?

Classic Cork is Class 23 domestic and Class 33 commercial; Organic reaches Class 43 (light industrial); Vermont is rated for heavy residential and normal commercial wear; Winderen engineered oak is suitable for domestic and commercial use. Ask us for the class of a specific decor.

What durability and wear test results do you hold?

Classic Cork passes 25,000-cycle castor-chair testing (EN ISO 4918) with residual indentation ≤0.2 mm; Organic passes 25,000 revolutions with indentation ≤0.10 mm; Vermont oak has a Brinell hardness of ≥100 N/mm². Full results are on each Technical Data Sheet.

What substrate and subfloor moisture conditions do you require?

The subfloor must be flat, sound, clean and dry. For bonded engineered oak and cork, keep relative humidity at or below 75% (BS 8203) or apply a surface DPM. Vermont requires subfloor moisture at or below 2.0% CM on a mineral screed (0.5% on anhydrite) with flatness to DIN 18202. Editable NBS clauses are on our downloads page.

How are your floors installed, floating or bonded?

It depends on the range. Winderen engineered oak can be floated or fully bonded; Classic Cork is fully bonded with FG MonoSil adhesive or laid as a click floor; Vermont is a click system, floated or glued; Endgrain wood blocks are fully bonded and finished in situ. Each format has an editable NBS clause on our downloads page.

What are the formaldehyde and VOC / indoor-air credentials?

Every range is Class E1 to EN 717-1 (Vermont at ≤0.05 ppm). Organic carries French A+ VOC and Eco-Institut/M1 labels and is REACH SVHC-free; Winderen is VOC-tested (Fraunhofer WKI); Vermont holds the Blue Angel eco-label (RAL-UZ 176).

Are your floors FSC or PEFC certified, and do you have EPDs?

Winderen engineered oak is FSC-certified with chain of custody valid to 2028, Vermont is PEFC-certified, and Endgrain is FSC and PEFC certified. An EPD to EN 15804 is available for the cork range, and we can supply chain-of-custody and life-cycle documentation for responsible-sourcing requirements.

How do your floors contribute to BREEAM and LEED?

Through EPDs (EN 15804), FSC/PEFC chain of custody, low-emission credentials (VOC A+, Eco-Institut/M1, formaldehyde E1), the carbon-negative life-cycle of cork and eco-labels such as Blue Angel. These support BREEAM Mat and Hea credits and LEED MR and EQ categories. Ask us for a documentation pack for your assessment. See our BREEAM and LEED flooring guide.

Can your floors be installed over raised access flooring (RAF)?

Yes. All of our ranges can be installed over raised access floor systems, bonded to the panels or floated according to the range, and we have supplied end-grain, engineered and cork floors for commercial schemes on RAF. Talk to us about the panel type and finish for your project. See our guide to flooring over raised access floors.

Can you provide light reflectance values (LRV)?

Yes. LRV varies by decor, and we can provide the value for a specified colour to support Approved Document M and Equality Act visual-contrast requirements. Request it alongside your sample. See our LRV data for flooring and stair nosings.

Are your floors suitable for wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms?

Classic Cork and Vermont resist standing water for 24 hours and suit kitchens, bathrooms and humid rooms, and our waterproof cork is built on a waterproof core. None of the ranges is intended for saunas, steam rooms or areas with floor drains.

“We worked with The Floor Gallery on a fairly large commercial flooring project, and the whole process was handled professionally from beginning to end. Their team clearly understands the products, installation requirements, and the practical details that can easily become problems on a larger job… It is hard to find a flooring company that can handle larger projects without creating unnecessary stress, but The Floor Gallery did exactly that. We would be happy to work with them again.”
