Project anchors
Sustainable specification across the UK.
"Sustainable flooring isn't a single label. UK projects assess against a stack of frameworks that each weight different sustainability dimensions: carbon, certification, indoor air, lifecycle, fire."
Frameworks
How sustainability gets measured.
BREEAM
Cork hits Mat 03 Exemplary; Vermont and Winderen hit Excellent. Plus strong scores on Hea 02 acoustics and Hea 05 indoor air.
SKA Rating
Cork and Organic both contribute strong scores on M3 (responsibly-sourced) and W6 (waste in use, low replacement frequency).
WELL
A+ VOC band across cork and Organic. ISO 22196 antibacterial-tested cork wear-layer suits clinical and wellness specifications.
London Plan
Cork's 9-year regenerative harvest maps directly to circular-economy criteria. EPD per project.
-101
kg CO&sub2;e/m² net
Carbon negative once balanced with carbon sequestration. The cork tree absorbs more CO&sub2; across its 9-year regenerative growth cycle than is emitted in cradle-to-gate manufacture.

BREEAM, FSC, EPD, the documentation pack
How specifiers measure flooring sustainability.
Most flooring suppliers claim sustainability. Few package the documentation. For BREEAM, WELL or in-house carbon-reporting schemes, the credit depends on what you can hand to the assessor, not what the brochure says. The Floor Gallery routes BREEAM Mat 03, FSC/PEFC chain-of-custody and EPD-verified embodied carbon documentation through every specifier quote. Here is what each one means and how the ranges score against them.
BREEAM Mat 03, responsible sourcing of materials.
BREEAM Mat 03 awards credits for proving responsible sourcing across the supply chain. For flooring, the credit hinges on certified chain of custody (FSC or PEFC), responsible sourcing certification of the supplier, and supply transparency back to the forest.
Classic Cork, cork plank.
FSC and PEFC chain of custody Portuguese cork forests. Verified responsible sourcing. BREEAM Mat 03 specified across UK projects.
Winderen, engineered oak.
FSC / PEFC chain of custody on European oak wear layer. Birch core sourced from PEFC-certified European mills. BREEAM Mat 03 documentation per project.
Organic, bio-based resilient.
Bio-based resilient flooring (ecuran: castor and canola oil with mineral chalk), not a timber product, so responsible sourcing is evidenced through Cradle to Cradle Silver certification and a published EPD rather than FSC/PEFC. Renewable raw materials, zero-VOC manufacture; contributes to BREEAM, LEED, DGNB and WELL.
Endgrain, solid timber blocks.
FSC and PEFC chain of custody on solid oak, smoked oak and larch end-grain blocks. Delivered raw and untreated; exceptional durability and a refinishable, decades-long service life make it a low whole-life impact choice for high-traffic interiors.
EPD-verified embodied carbon.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are third-party verified statements of a product’s environmental impact across its life cycle, from raw material extraction through manufacture, transport, installation, use and end-of-life. The carbon number on a project sustainability dashboard is only defensible if it comes from an EPD.
What the cork EPD says.
The Classic Cork EPD reads -101 kg CO2e/m2 net. The number is negative because cork oak forests sequester more CO2 across the product life cycle than the harvest, manufacture and transport release. The cork bark itself is harvested on a nine-year regenerative cycle without felling the tree.
What the engineered wood EPD says.
The Winderen and Vermont engineered oak EPDs are available per project on request. Engineered oak is a low-carbon material relative to vinyl or laminate alternatives, a typical engineered oak floor sits at single-digit kg CO2e/m2 net, with the largest contributors being transport and finishing rather than the wood itself.
What the Organic EPD says.
The Organic (ecuran) range carries a third-party EPD to EN 15804+A2. Its cradle-to-gate embodied carbon is 2.76 kg CO2e/m2 (A1–A3), low for a resilient floor, and the renewable castor- and canola-oil feedstock stores 1.55 kg CO2/m2 of biogenic carbon. PVC-free and Cradle to Cradle Silver certified (since 2018), it is a low-carbon, zero-VOC, odourless alternative to vinyl and LVT, with Blue Angel and GREENGUARD Gold low-emission certification: the credentials specifiers cite for indoor air quality under WELL and for responsible-material credits under BREEAM and LEED.

FSC vs PEFC, which chain of custody applies.
Both FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are credible chain-of-custody schemes for sustainably managed forests. BREEAM accepts both. Most TFG ranges carry one or both as standard. For specifier projects that require a particular certification, TFG quotes the certification on the product line at quote stage.
What you get with every specifier quote.
The Floor Gallery sustainability documentation pack includes:
- Chain-of-custody certificates (FSC or PEFC) for every line on the quote
- EPD-verified embodied carbon data, downloadable PDFs
- BREEAM Mat 03 documentation suitable for the assessor
- Bfl-s1 fire rating certification
- UFH compatibility data where applicable
- Project case studies for shortlisting
Documentation is routed through the quote automatically, specifiers do not need to request it separately.
Sustainability FAQ
What architects ask about flooring sustainability.
What is the difference between FSC and PEFC?
Both certify chain of custody back to sustainably managed forests. FSC is more commonly cited in design-led specifier work; PEFC is more common in European industrial supply chains. BREEAM Mat 03 accepts both. TFG ranges carry one or both certifications depending on the source mill.
How can a flooring product be carbon-negative?
Cork is a regenerative material, the bark is harvested without felling the tree, on a nine-year cycle. The cork oak forests in Portugal and Spain sequester more CO2 across the harvest cycle than is released during manufacture and transport. The EPD captures this as a net negative figure: -101 kg CO2e/m2 for Classic Cork.
What does BREEAM Mat 03 require for flooring?
Mat 03 awards credits for responsible sourcing of construction products. For flooring, the assessor needs chain-of-custody evidence (FSC/PEFC), responsible sourcing certification of the supplier, and life-cycle environmental documentation (EPDs). TFG packages this documentation per quote.
Is engineered wood sustainable?
Engineered wood is more efficient per cubic metre of harvested timber than solid wood, the multi-layer core uses lower-grade timber while the wear layer is real hardwood. With FSC/PEFC chain of custody, engineered wood is BREEAM-compliant and reads well on embodied carbon. Cork is the more sustainable cousin, but engineered oak remains a credible specifier choice.
What is an EPD and why does it matter?
An Environmental Product Declaration is a third-party verified statement of a product’s life-cycle environmental impacts, carbon, water, acidification, ozone depletion. For BREEAM, WELL and in-house sustainability reporting, the EPD is the document that turns a sustainability claim into a defensible number.
How does TFG handle end-of-life and circular economy?
Cork flooring is biodegradable. Engineered wood can be reused, repurposed or, at end of life, used as biomass. TFG works with installer partners on take-back schemes for project-specific arrangements. The cork supply chain itself is a circular system, our cork stoppers feed cork flooring manufacture, and the forest cycle continues.
The most sustainable flooring in the UK at a glance
The most sustainable flooring in the UK is cork. It is the only genuinely carbon-negative floor, storing more carbon than its production emits, with a balance of up to -101 kg CO2e/m² on The Floor Gallery’s Classic Cork, and it is harvested from the bark of living cork oaks every nine years without felling the tree. For a timber floor, choose FSC or PEFC certified engineered oak; for a PVC-free resilient floor, the Cradle to Cradle certified Organic range.
- Most sustainable overall: cork, carbon negative (up to -101 kg CO2e/m²), rapidly renewable on a nine-year bark harvest.
- Best sustainable timber: FSC and PEFC certified engineered oak, which uses far less slow-grown timber than solid wood.
- Best PVC-free resilient: the Organic range, a bio-based floor that is Cradle to Cradle certified and free of PVC.
- Best for BREEAM and LEED credits: cork and Organic, both with EPDs and A+ low-VOC indoor-air credentials.
- Best for healthy indoor air: cork and Organic, both low-emission and formaldehyde Class E1.
