The Nosing Collection

The Nosing Collection

Solid oak stair nosings, matched to the floor

Made to order in Yorkshire, colour-matched to any range, and specified with the slip resistance and visual contrast that stairs are required to have.

A stair nosing caps the front edge of every tread – the most vulnerable, most walked-on line in the building. Ours are milled from solid European oak, so the edge wears, sands and ages exactly like the boards it sits against.

Straight drop and bull nose solid oak stair nosing profiles

Straight drop (left) and bull nose (right).

Two profiles

Choose the edge that matches the language of the scheme.

  • Straight dropA square, contemporary edge – a crisp line for modern and minimal interiors.
  • Bull noseA softly rounded edge, more forgiving underfoot, for traditional, heritage and residential stairs.

Both are machined from solid oak and glued down for a seamless finish with no visible fixings.

Oak stair nosing with anti-slip insert and solid brass insert

Anti-slip and solid brass inserts.

An inset for looks – or for slip

A strip runs the length of the nosing. Specify it for appearance, for wayfinding contrast, or for measured slip performance.

Three insert options

Solid brass

Warm metallic line for premium and heritage schemes; patinas over time.

Stainless steel

Clean, hard-wearing contemporary detail.

Anti-slip insert

REACH-compliant flexible PVC, R11, PTV 36+ wet and dry; wide colour range with a published LRV for every colour.

Anti-slip insert, colour range

Our anti-slip inserts are machined flush into the top face of the nosing, giving a continuous non-slip band across the step edge on both straight-drop and bullnose profiles. A light reflectance value (LRV) is published for every colour to support Approved Document M and BS 8300 visual-contrast decisions. Three finishes are available.

Specified for the regulations

Two requirements usually drive the specification.

Approved Document K – slip

The anti-slip insert gives a high-friction tread edge, R11, with a PTV of 36+ in both wet and dry conditions, and pendulum (PTV) data to evidence performance. See our note on PTV slip resistance.

Approved Document M / BS 8300 – contrast

Colour-matching the oak nosing while specifying a contrasting insert delivers the visual contrast accessible stairs require; we provide the LRV figures for each combination.

Matched to any floor, any colour

The collection works with every floor we supply – Winderen engineered oak, Vermont and Classic Cork – and we colour-match to any reference you give us. It is the finishing piece of a coordinated floor build-up: one supplier for the floor, the acoustic underlay beneath it and the compliant step edge that completes it.

Where it is used

Anywhere there are stairs and a specification to meet: private residences and apartments, workplaces and receptions, hotels and hospitality, heritage and listed interiors, and public buildings including schools and healthcare, where slip resistance and visual contrast are scrutinised most closely.

Made in Britain, made to order

Every nosing is manufactured to order in Yorkshire from solid oak, colour-matched and cut to the profile and dimensions your project needs, then glued down on site. Sizes, lead times and full technical data are provided with every quote and in our downloads library. For wider specifier support, see flooring for architects.

Common questions

Can you match the nosing to a floor that is not yours?

Yes – we colour-match to any physical sample or reference you provide, not only to our own ranges.

Which insert should I specify for slip resistance?

The anti-slip insert is rated R11 with a PTV of 36+ (low slip potential) in both wet and dry; a pyramid-textured version is available for heavy-traffic and wet areas. We can advise against your PTV target.

Are they solid oak or a veneer?

Solid European oak throughout, so the edge wears and can be refinished in line with the floor.

How are they fixed?

Glued down, with no visible mechanical fixings, for a seamless finish.
