Cork flooring, specifier knowledge hub

The cork flooring guide.

Cork is the floor that does multiple things at once, acoustic, thermal, carbon-negative, biophilic, and (with the Classic Cork waterproof construction) now waterproof. This hub indexes everything The Floor Gallery publishes on cork: the specifier deep-dives, the regulatory explainers, the cost analyses, the sector use-cases, and the comparison work against vinyl, LVT and engineered wood. Architects use it to shortlist; specifiers use it to evidence; clients use it to understand what they’re getting.

The development that changed cork’s specifier reach.

Classic Cork construction shipped a 100% waterproof cork plank construction. Cork is now credible in bathrooms, kitchens, hospitality wet zones and healthcare interiors, the rooms it used to lose to vinyl. Our cork rivals haven’t started leading with this. We have.

Cork flooring, specifier FAQ

Specifier questions about cork flooring.

What reaction-to-fire class does cork flooring achieve?

The Classic Cork Collection is classified Bfl-s1 to BS EN 13501-1 as standard, the reaction-to-fire class most commercial and specifier-grade floors are expected to meet, paired with s1, the lowest smoke rating. Confirm the classification for a specific decor against its EN 13501-1 report, which we can supply on request.

Is cork flooring suitable for commercial use, and what is its use class?

Yes. The Classic Cork Collection is warranted for commercial use, 10 years commercial and lifetime residential, and is specified across hospitality, education, healthcare and retail. It is classified for wear to BS EN ISO 10874; ask us for the use class of a specific decor and build-up.

Can cork flooring be installed over underfloor heating?

Yes. Cork is compatible with underfloor heating and its natural warmth suits it well. Keep the floor surface temperature at or below 27°C and follow a gradual commissioning cycle before and after installation.

How is cork flooring installed?

Depending on the range, cork is either fully bonded to the subfloor with FG MonoSil (a single-component MS-polymer adhesive) or laid as a floating click floor. The subfloor should be flat, sound, clean and dry, no more than 75% relative humidity to BS 8203, before laying.

How sustainable is cork flooring?

Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak without felling the tree, and the Classic Cork Collection is carbon-negative on a life-cycle basis and 100% PVC-free. FSC chain-of-custody documentation and an EPD to BS EN 15804 are available to support BREEAM and responsible-sourcing requirements.

What slip resistance does cork flooring offer?

Slip resistance (the Pendulum Test Value) depends on the finish and site conditions, so request the PTV to BS 7976 for the specified decor. See our guide to PTV and slip resistance for how the figures work and what counts as low-slip.
