Featured project

Stirrups Hotel Bracknell -- Winderen herringbone Pisa.

Studio ROWE specified Winderen herringbone Pisa across the restaurant, bar and reception of Stirrups Hotel. A single material running through the full ground floor public spaces. The herringbone reads as period gesture and performs as modern engineered.

"A 2-6mm oak top layer over a multi-species substrate uses real timber where it matters and engineered substrate where it doesn't. The thinner lamella reduces real-timber footprint per m² by ~40% versus solid oak."

Specification

The engineered wood, in detail.

Construction

2-6mm oak top

European oak top layer, FSC certified (Winderen) or PEFC (Vermont). ~40% less real timber per m² versus solid oak parquet.

Format

Plank + parquet

Plank, herringbone, oversized herringbone (up to 1500mm), chevron, multi-species marquetry. Single-material specification across multiple zones.

UFH

27-29°C

UFH-compatible -- Vermont to 29°C surface, Winderen to 27°C. Engineered construction tolerates seasonal RH.

Compliance

FSC / PEFC + EPD

FSC + PEFC chain-of-custody. EPD documentation per project. BREEAM Mat 03 Excellent.

2-6mm

real oak top layer

~40% less real timber per m² versus solid oak parquet. The substrate handles structural load; the top layer delivers visual + sand/refinish life.

FSC

chain of custody

FSC certified Winderen + PEFC certified Vermont. Plus Eco Institut M1 + Blue Angel on Vermont. BREEAM Mat 03 Excellent.

29°C

UFH surface temp

UFH-compatible to 29°C surface across Vermont, 27°C across Winderen. Engineered construction tolerates seasonal RH movement.

Compare The Floor Gallery to other UK engineered wood suppliers

Specifiers often ask how our Winderen and Vermont engineered ranges sit against the other UK A&D suppliers. We’ve put together side-by-side comparisons on the criteria that matter for shortlist decisions, colour range, country of origin transparency, FSC / PEFC documentation, sample policy and BREEAM Mat 03 evidence.

Engineered wood — specifier FAQ

What architects ask about engineered wood flooring.

What’s the difference between engineered wood and solid wood?

Engineered wood is constructed from a hardwood top layer (the wear layer, typically 3-6mm of oak) bonded to a stable multi-layer plywood or birch core. The result is dimensionally more stable than solid wood across humidity and temperature swings, which makes engineered the safer specification for underfloor heating and for fitted installations across larger floor plates. The wear layer is real oak, so engineered floors can be sanded and refinished like solid — typically twice across a 25-year service life.

Is engineered wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. The multi-layer core construction is specifically what makes engineered the right answer for UFH. Both the Winderen and Vermont ranges are UFH-compatible at standard flow temperatures (max surface temperature 27°C). TFG provides UFH-specific installation data on request, including expansion gaps and acclimatisation periods.

How long does engineered wood flooring last?

The Floor Gallery’s engineered wood ranges are warranted at 25 years structurally, with the oak wear layer supporting two full sanding and refinishing cycles across that period. Real-world service life on a well-installed engineered floor is comfortably 30-40 years, longer than the lease cycle of most commercial projects.

Is the wood FSC certified?

Yes. All Winderen and Vermont engineered wood ranges carry FSC or PEFC chain of custody. For BREEAM Mat 03 schemes, TFG routes the chain-of-custody evidence and EPD-verified embodied carbon documentation through the quote.

What patterns and formats are available?

The Winderen range includes herringbone and natural-rustic plank formats. Vermont (by Sagrada) is supplied as Olive Oak in herringbone and plank. Bespoke widths and finishes are available on project quotes. All ranges ship as 100mm samples UK-wide within 48 hours.

How does engineered oak compare to walnut or other species?

European oak is the dominant specifier choice in the UK for engineered flooring because of its grain consistency, dimensional stability, finish range and supply chain transparency. American walnut, ash and reclaimed species are available through TFG on project quotes but are specified less often — the brief usually has oak written into it.

Where has TFG engineered wood been specified?

Recent UK projects include 35 Grosvenor (Studio KKD), Pantechnicon Sachi (Vermont Olive Oak by Sagrada), Oxford House and Taylor Maxwell. Project anchors and case studies are available on request for specifier shortlisting.
