Queen Mary 2 — Cruise Ship Dance Floor
Winderen Engineered Wood, custom multi-species design
A bespoke dance floor for the Queen Mary 2, fabricated from the Winderen Engineered Wood collection in a custom design that combines several wood species in a marquetry-style pattern. The layout was set out plank by plank so the contrasting tones of the species read as a single composed surface across the dance floor.
Engineered construction was specified for dimensional stability against the temperature, humidity and vibration ranges of a working cruise ship — conditions in which a solid wood floor would cup and gap. Winderen's 2–6mm European oak top layer (3mm standard) on a moisture-resistant birch plywood core carries the species variation across the pattern while holding tolerances at sea, and the 500+ colour bank and bespoke matching service gave the design team the species range needed to deliver the brief.
