End Grain Wood Block Flooring

End grain flooring is the toughest, most characterful timber floor you can specify. Made from solid blocks of oak laid end-up, the direction in which wood best resists wear, it was the floor of choice for Victorian factories and is now prized in retail, hospitality and heritage interiors for its depth, durability and provenance.

Award-recognised: our Endgrain Oak features in a CFJ Awards 2026 finalist project at MYO Kings Cross, solid end-grain oak blocks chosen for a workspace built to last.

Why specify end grain

End grain suits high-traffic, design-led commercial projects that want craft underfoot. Talk to us about specifying end grain or request samples.

Why end grain is so hard-wearing

Because you walk on the end of the wood fibres rather than their sides, end grain resists abrasion, denting and heavy point loads far better than conventional plank or parquet. It is the reason end grain was the original surface under milling machines and lathes, and why it shrugs off trolley wheels, stiletto heels and rolling luggage in modern commercial schemes. Each block is a cross-section of the tree, so the floor reads as a mosaic of growth rings, every piece unique, with no two alike.

Built for commercial and high-traffic interiors

End grain earns its place in exactly the spaces that punish a floor. We have supplied it for flagship retail, including oak end grain at Selfridges, and for shopping-centre concourses and seating areas where footfall never stops. It suits restaurants, hotels, galleries, workspace and industrial conversions: anywhere a specifier wants warmth and craft underfoot without compromising on durability.

Finishes and species

The Endgrain Collection is offered in solid oak, smoked oak and larch, in natural, brushed, smoked and white-oiled finishes. Natural and brushed oak keep the warm, golden mosaic of the growth rings; smoked oak deepens to a rich, weathered brown; larch and white-oiled finishes lift the floor to a paler, contemporary grey. All are solid timber blocks, no veneer, no added layers, so the floor can be sanded and refinished over a very long life.

Heritage and conservation interiors

End grain’s long history makes it a natural fit for heritage and listed interiors, where it references the timber-block floors of Victorian mills and civic buildings while meeting modern specification standards. It is a quietly authentic choice for conservation-led hospitality and cultural projects that want craft and provenance underfoot. End grain is one format within our wider wood block flooring range.

End grain wood flooring, FAQs

Is end grain flooring durable?
Yes, exceptionally. Because the wear surface is the end of the wood fibres, end grain resists abrasion, denting and heavy point loads better than plank or parquet, which is why it was historically used in factories and on city streets.
Where can end grain wood flooring be used?
It suits high-traffic commercial and public interiors, retail, hospitality, galleries, workspace and industrial conversions, as well as heritage and residential schemes that want a hard-wearing natural floor.
What species and finishes are available?
The Floor Gallery’s Endgrain Collection comes in solid oak, smoked oak and larch, with natural, brushed, smoked and white-oiled finishes.
Is end grain flooring solid wood?
Yes. Each block is a solid cross-section of timber rather than a veneer, so the floor can be sanded and refinished over decades.
Is The Floor Gallery’s end grain flooring sustainable?
Yes, it is FSC-certified solid timber.
How is end-grain wood flooring supplied?

End-grain is supplied as solid cross-cut timber blocks, raw and untreated as standard. For larger areas it comes webbed into mosaic-style sheets, blocks bonded to a mesh backing in a brick-bond pattern, usually around ten blocks per row, so they lay quickly and evenly like a tiled panel. Individual loose blocks are also available, and optional factory pre-oiling can be specified.

What substrates can end-grain flooring be laid on?

End-grain blocks are fully bonded to a sound, flat, dry subfloor, typically a sand/cement or anhydrite screed, or an exterior-grade plywood overlay on a timber base. The substrate should be flat (SR1), clean and within moisture limits (max 75% RH to BS 8203, or a surface DPM). Underfloor heating is possible, confirm the build-up with us.

Is end-grain delivered finished or unfinished?

Unfinished (raw) as standard. The floor is sanded flat and finished in situ after laying, oil, hardwax-oil or lacquer to suit the traffic, which gives full control of colour and sheen. Optional factory pre-oiling is available on request.

What sizes and thicknesses does end-grain come in?

Block faces are typically 40×85, 45×90, 58×88 and 68×88 mm, in thicknesses from 18 to 40 mm, in oak, smoked oak, pine, spruce and larch. Sizes are approximate and confirmed at order.

Is end-grain suitable for heavy or industrial traffic?

Yes, because you walk on the end of the wood fibres, end-grain resists abrasion, denting and heavy point loads far better than plank or parquet. It historically carried forklift and trolley traffic and suits retail, hospitality, heritage and industrial interiors. Confirm loadings with us for the specification.

How is end-grain installed and finished?

Blocks or mosaic sheets are fully bonded to the prepared substrate, left to cure, then sanded flat progressively to a fine grit and finished in situ. Our editable NBS M42 clause is on the downloads page.
