Endgrain Collection, cross-cut solid wood block flooring

End-grain flooring is the toughest wood floor you can specify, and the least understood. Instead of laying boards with the grain running along the surface, end-grain flooring is made from blocks of timber cut across the trunk, so the cut ends of the grain face up. It is the same principle as a butcher’s block, scaled to a floor, and it has a long industrial pedigree for one reason: nothing wears it out.

Why the cut direction changes everything

In a conventional plank, foot traffic and loads bear down across the grain. In an end-grain block, they bear down into the grain, along the fibres, the strongest axis of the timber. The result is exceptional abrasion and pressure resistance: end-grain blocks historically floored factories, breweries and workshops, taking forklift and machinery loads that would crush a plank floor. The Endgrain Collection brings that performance into design-led interiors.

Species and character

The Endgrain Collection is genuine solid wood, offered in oak, smoked oak, pine, spruce, larch and smoked larch. Because the cut exposes the annual rings, each block reads as a distinctive ring-and-knot pattern, a texture that works for both heritage and contemporary schemes and that no printed or veneered floor reproduces.

Raw, untreated and finished to suit

Blocks are delivered raw and untreated as standard, which gives the design team full control of the final finish. Optional pre-oiling is available to enhance durability and tone, with finishes from colourless oil through extra white, white, transparent, grey and dark. Available in a range of dimensions and thicknesses, it can be tailored to the project.

Where it belongs

End-grain suits anywhere that wants the warmth and character of solid timber with genuine hard-wearing credentials: retail, hospitality, museums and heritage interiors, workspaces and high-traffic public spaces. It also brings acoustic and thermal comfort, and, as solid timber, it can be sanded and refinished, giving a long service life. For specifiers, it is the wood floor that does not trade durability for beauty. For the full range of block formats, see wood block flooring.
