Classic Cork, now waterproof
Waterproof Cork Flooring
Cork flooring can be genuinely waterproof. Our Classic Cork collection has a 100% waterproof core, so it copes with spills, steam and damp far better than ordinary cork or many wood floors, a smart, comfortable choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and busy family homes. Unlike floors only described as “water-resistant”, waterproof Classic Cork is warm and quiet underfoot, kind to joints, and naturally sustainable: carbon-negative, PVC-free and FSC-certified.
Cork has always been warm, quiet and sustainable, but never truly waterproof. That changes with the new Classic Cork board: a PVC-free cork rigid-core floor whose locking joints are independently tested to shed water for 24 hours without leaking. For the first time, you can put genuine cork in bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas with confidence.
What makes this cork waterproof
The new Classic Cork board is built on a rigid core rather than a traditional glue-down backing, five layers engineered to keep water out while keeping the genuine cork surface you can see and feel:
- Protective wear surface, sealed against spills and staining
- 0.3 mm natural cork veneer, the real cork you walk on
- 1.1 mm cork inlay
- 4.8 mm PVC-free cork rigid core, the dimensionally stable, water-resistant heart of the board
- 1.0 mm integrated cork underlay, warmth and quiet built in
The waterproof claim is backed by independent testing, not marketing:
Locking joints: no leakage after 24 hours of water exposure (ISO 4760:2022, Annex D). Water resistance to ISO 4760 with swell ≤ 0.3 mm, and thickness swelling under 1% (EN 317). In other words, the surface, the core and, critically, the joints between planks are all built to resist standing water.
Where you can use it
Because the board and its joints resist water, the new Classic Cork suits the rooms cork could never properly go before: bathrooms, ensuites and WCs, kitchens and utility rooms, and wet-prone hallways and entrances. With an ISO 10874 Class 33 commercial rating it is equally at home in busy commercial and hospitality washrooms and back-of-house. Still everything cork is loved for
Waterproofing changes where cork can go, it doesn’t change what makes cork special:
- Warm and quiet underfoot, 14 dB impact-sound reduction, with cork’s natural softness and insulation
- 100% PVC-free and carbon-negative, a net life-cycle balance of around −101 kg CO₂e/m² (EY “Value of Cork” study)
- Class Bfl-s1 reaction to fire (EN 13501-1) and Class E1 formaldehyde
- Hard-wearing, 25,000 castor-chair cycles (EN ISO 4918) and residual indentation ≤ 0.2 mm
- GREENGUARD Gold, Cradle to Cradle Silver and FSC-certified cork
Is cork flooring waterproof?
Honestly: traditional glue-down cork is water-resistant, not waterproof, fine for a spill wiped up quickly, but not for standing water or wet rooms. The new Classic Cork rigid-core board is different. Its sealed surface, PVC-free rigid core and tested locking joints (no leak after 24 hours, ISO 4760 Annex D) make it genuinely waterproof, which is why we can now recommend cork for bathrooms and kitchens without caveats.
Can you use cork flooring in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes. The new waterproof Classic Cork rigid-core board is suitable for bathrooms, ensuites, WCs, kitchens and utility rooms, with thickness swelling under 1 percent (EN 317) and a Class 33 commercial use rating.
Is waterproof cork flooring sustainable?
Yes. It is 100 percent PVC-free and carbon-negative on a life-cycle balance, around -101 kg CO2e per square metre (EY Value of Cork study), with GREENGUARD Gold and Cradle to Cradle Silver certification.
Can cork flooring get wet?
Yes. Sealed cork shrugs off everyday spills and splashes if they are wiped up, and brief contact with water is fine. Standing water or flooding is not, so mop it up promptly. Classic Cork adds a waterproof core, so it handles damp rooms far better than standard cork.
Are cork floors waterproof?
Cork as a natural material is water-resistant, not waterproof: it tolerates splashes but not standing water. Classic Cork is built on a waterproof core with a sealed surface, so it is suited to kitchens, bathrooms and humid areas where a conventional cork floor would not be.
Can cork flooring handle high-traffic commercial spaces?
Yes. Classic Cork is rated Class 33 for heavy commercial use, resists indentation thanks to its natural resilience, and carries a 10-year commercial and lifetime residential warranty, suiting offices, hospitality, retail and education.
Does cork flooring go mouldy in bathrooms or kitchens?
It is very unlikely to. Cork’s cell walls contain suberin, a natural waxy compound that repels water and resists mould, mildew and rot, which is one reason cork suits bathrooms and kitchens. Waterproof cork is built on a waterproof core and factory-sealed, so surface water sits on top and wipes away rather than soaking in. Keep perimeter joints sealed and wipe up standing water and the floor will stay mould-free in normal use.
