Waterproof cork vs vinyl (LVT): the PVC-free alternative
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) won the waterproof-flooring market on practicality, but it is, fundamentally, plastic. There is now a waterproof floor that matches it on performance and beats it on material health: the new PVC-free cork rigid-core board.
Where they are the same
On the practical basics, the two are closely matched. Both are genuinely waterproof, both use a rigid-core click system that floats over the subfloor, both suit bathrooms, kitchens and commercial spaces, and both are hard-wearing and easy to live with. If all you need is “a waterproof floor that clicks together,” either will do the job.
Where cork wins
The difference is what the floor is made of, and how it feels. Our cork rigid-core board is 100% PVC-free, no plasticisers or phthalates, where LVT is a petroleum-based plastic product. It is carbon-negative on a life-cycle balance (around −101 kg CO₂e/m², EY “Value of Cork” study), against LVT’s fossil-fuel footprint. Underfoot, cork is genuinely warmer and quieter (14 dB impact-sound reduction) thanks to its cellular structure and integrated underlay. And it carries the material-health credentials specifiers increasingly ask for: GREENGUARD Gold, Cradle to Cradle Silver and FSC. It is a real, natural surface, not a printed plastic décor.
| Cork rigid-core | Vinyl (LVT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Natural cork, PVC-free | Petroleum-based plastic (PVC) |
| Waterproof | Yes (tested joints, ISO 4760) | Yes |
| Carbon | Carbon-negative (≈ −101 kg/m²) | Fossil-based footprint |
| Warmth & acoustics | Warm, quiet (14 dB) | Harder, cooler underfoot |
| Material health | GREENGUARD Gold, C2C Silver, FSC | Varies; PVC-based |
| Surface | Genuine cork | Printed décor layer |
Where LVT might still suit
We will be straight about it: LVT is usually cheaper, comes in a huge range of photo-realistic wood and stone décors, and is very thin for level-access thresholds. If budget is the single deciding factor, or you specifically need a printed stone effect, LVT competes. Cork is the premium, natural choice, you are paying for a real material with a genuine sustainability story.
The verdict
For a waterproof floor that is also genuinely sustainable, healthy and warm underfoot, the new PVC-free cork rigid-core board is the standout alternative to vinyl, the same practicality, without the plastic. See the full waterproof cork specification.
