Engineered wood flooring for Birmingham projects
We supply FSC-certified Winderen engineered oak and PEFC-certified Vermont hybrid wood to architects and specifiers across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands – supply-only, with the technical evidence a specification needs and samples on your desk quickly.
Specifying for Birmingham’s building stock
Birmingham’s pipeline is unusually varied, and the floor has to answer to it. The Big City Plan continues to reshape the core – Paradise, Snow Hill, Smithfield and the Digbeth regeneration are turning over commercial and mixed-use space at pace, while the Colmore Business District drives a steady stream of Cat A and Cat B office refurbishment. Around them sit two markets that behave very differently underfoot: a large and still-growing purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) sector serving the University of Birmingham, Aston and Birmingham City University, and a city-centre residential market that runs from Jewellery Quarter conversions to new-build apartment towers. Each asks something specific of a wood floor, and specifying the same board across all of them rarely holds up.
Which range suits which scheme
The choice usually comes down to how hard the floor will be worked:
- Vermont – PEFC-certified hybrid wood, positioned for dent resistance and heavy footfall. It is the range for hospitality and retail around Grand Central and the Bullring, for PBSA corridors and communal areas, and for high-traffic office circulation where a real-wood surface still has to take a beating.
- Winderen – FSC-certified engineered oak with a 25-year warranty, in plank and herringbone. It suits premium city-centre residential, hotel guest rooms and front-of-house, and design-led office refurbishment where the look and the credentials both have to stand up.
Both are engineered constructions – a hardwood wear layer over a stable core – which matters in Birmingham’s mix of new screeds, underfloor heating and older converted buildings where movement and moisture are real considerations.
Eco-friendly flooring for Birmingham projects
Birmingham specifiers are being asked to show their working on sustainability, not just claim it. Retrofit-first briefs, BREEAM targets and client ESG reporting all push the same questions down to the floor: where does the timber come from, what is in the product, and what evidence can go in the submission? These are the answers we are asked for most on Birmingham schemes.
Responsibly sourced timber, third-party certified
Winderen is FSC-certified engineered oak and Vermont is PEFC-certified hybrid wood, so both ranges come with chain-of-custody documentation you can attach to a BREEAM materials submission. Engineered construction is also the lower-impact route for refurbishment: a hardwood wear layer over a stable core uses far less prime timber than a solid board for the same finished look, and the wear layer can still be re-sanded in service. Winderen carries a 25-year warranty, so the specification is built to last rather than be replaced.
Healthy interiors: emissions and indoor air quality
Indoor air quality matters most in the schemes Birmingham builds most of: student accommodation, offices and apartments. Winderen is E1 for formaldehyde and VOC tested. Vermont is also E1, with formaldehyde at or below 0.05 ppm and a formaldehyde-free UV acrylic lacquer, and its technical data sheet lists Blue Angel (RAL-UZ 176) and Eco-Institut M1 ratings. We supply the test data with the specification pack to support WELL and BREEAM health and wellbeing credits.

PVC-free options where wood is not the answer
For heavy-wear corridors, areas next to wet zones and places where a resilient floor is the better call, we offer PVC-free alternatives:
- Classic Cork Collection: natural, carbon-negative cork with a PVC-free rigid core, a 10-year commercial and lifetime residential warranty, and Bfl-s1 reaction to fire. It is also warm and quiet underfoot, with 14 dB impact sound reduction, which helps in student accommodation and residential towers.
- Organic Collection: a PVC-free alternative to LVT made from castor oil, canola oil and chalk. It is Cradle to Cradle certified, rated to Class 43 for light industrial use, French A+ for VOC emissions and free of REACH SVHCs.

Evidence you can put in the submission
Every Birmingham specification quote includes the documents sustainability consultants ask for: FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody, EPDs carrying the A1 to A3 embodied-carbon figure, emissions and indoor-air-quality test data, fire and acoustic classifications, and warranties. For more on how this maps to credits, see our BREEAM and LEED flooring guide, our explainer on FSC and PEFC certification and our wider sustainable flooring approach. Evidence for specification
Every specifier quote ships with the pack a Birmingham project team needs to make the call and defend it:
- Reaction-to-fire classification for the finished floor.
- Approved Document Part E acoustic data, with SilentLay underlay build-ups where separating floors are in play – directly relevant to PBSA and residential towers.
- Moisture / relative-humidity guidance for screeds and underfloor heating.
- Slip resistance (PTV, BS 7976) where the brief calls for it.
- EPDs, and warranties – Winderen 25-year, Vermont PEFC-certified.
It all sits in our downloads library, and pairs with wider specifier support for architects.
Delivery and support across the West Midlands
We are supply-only, so there is no channel conflict with your contractor – we sit behind the specification, not across it. Samples are dispatched UK-wide to Birmingham practices and site offices; deliveries are scheduled to site with the city centre’s access and loading constraints planned in; and you deal with one specifier contact from first sample to final delivery. Where the floor is glued down, we supply MonoSil P, our solvent-free, EC1 Plus adhesive, and can advise on the full build-up as a coordinated floor system.
Common questions
No – we are supply-only. We work alongside your chosen contractor and provide fixing, adhesive and build-up guidance so the floor is specified and installed correctly.
Yes. Samples are dispatched UK-wide – tell us the ranges and colours you are shortlisting and we will get them to your studio or site office.
Vermont, for its dent resistance and heavy-traffic performance. Choose Winderen where a premium engineered-oak look is the priority, such as guest rooms or front-of-house.
It depends on the use. For timber floors, FSC-certified Winderen engineered oak or PEFC-certified Vermont hybrid wood give third-party sourcing assurance. Where you want a PVC-free alternative to vinyl, Classic Cork and the Organic Collection are the options. We can recommend the right range once we know the scheme and the credits you are targeting.
Yes. We supply chain-of-custody documentation, EPDs, and emissions and indoor-air-quality data with specifier quotes, which support materials, health and wellbeing credits. Credit awards depend on the whole scheme, so confirm the evidence needed with your assessor.
