Organic Flooring vs LVT

Organic flooring vs LVT

The PVC-free, bio-based alternative to vinyl, compared like-for-like on the specification points architects actually check.

In short: LVT is a PVC (vinyl) floor; our Organic range is bio-based and completely PVC-free. They install and wear alike and meet the same commercial use classes, but Organic removes the plasticisers, chlorine and end-of-life problems of vinyl. For a project bound by a PVC-avoidance policy, or chasing WELL and BREEAM health credits, Organic is the closest like-for-like swap for LVT.

What each one is

LVT (luxury vinyl tile)

A polymer floor built on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with a printed décor film and a clear wear layer. Hard-wearing, water-resistant and cheap to produce, which is why it dominates commercial fit-out, but it relies on chlorine chemistry and plasticisers, and is difficult to recycle at end of life.

Organic, bio-based, PVC-free

A resilient floor of comparable format and build-up, but made without any PVC. It delivers the same practical benefits, water resistance, dimensional stability, a tough wear layer, using a bio-based polymer, so it sidesteps the health and disposal questions that increasingly rule vinyl out of a specification.

Where LVT still wins

To be fair to vinyl: at the very budget end LVT is cheaper, its décor libraries are enormous, and its sheer ubiquity means short lead times and a contractor base familiar with it. If a scheme has no sustainability or health requirement and price is the only driver, LVT remains the default.

Where Organic wins

Where a project carries a PVC-avoidance policy, targets WELL or BREEAM health and materials credits, or simply wants defensible indoor-air-quality and end-of-life credentials, Organic is the like-for-like resilient floor that clears those hurdles, without asking the design team to compromise on wear, water resistance or format. The specifier verdict

LVT and Organic solve the same brief, a tough, water-resistant, design-led resilient floor, but with opposite material stories. If your specification is neutral on health and sustainability, LVT is the cheaper habit. If it is bound by a materials or wellbeing standard, Organic is the answer that keeps the performance and drops the PVC. Frequently asked questions

Is organic flooring as durable as LVT?

Yes. The Organic range is rated to Use Class 34/43 for heavy commercial traffic, equal to or above typical LVT, with a comparable wear layer, water resistance and underfloor-heating compatibility, so it stands in for vinyl without a durability trade-off.

Why choose PVC-free flooring over vinyl?

PVC-free flooring avoids the chlorine chemistry and plasticisers used in vinyl, which matters for indoor air quality, for projects with a PVC-avoidance policy, and for WELL and BREEAM health credits. It also gives a cleaner end-of-life route than PVC waste.

Does organic flooring cost more than LVT?

Organic sits close to mid-to-upper LVT on cost, not at the budget end. On a project measured on whole-life value, indoor air quality and credit contribution rather than lowest capital cost, it is competitive, and often the only compliant option under a PVC ban.

Can organic flooring contribute to BREEAM or WELL?

Yes. With a published EPD, Cradle to Cradle certification and GREENGUARD Gold / M1 / A+ emissions ratings, Organic contributes to BREEAM Mat and Hea credits and WELL air-quality features, evidence LVT generally cannot supply.
