Organic flooring, PVC-free resilient flooring for UK architects

Organic flooring from The Floor Gallery is a PVC-free, bio-based polyurethane composite of castor or rapeseed oil and chalk. Use class 34/43 commercial wear, manufactured on production lines powered approximately 60-70 percent by solar with the balance from purchased wind electricity, zero water consumption in manufacture. The architect’s alternative to PVC-based LVT and Marmoleum where sustainability evidence and design flexibility matter.
What Organic flooring is
Organic is a heterogeneous PU-bio composite flooring product covered by DIN EN 16776. The composition is plant-derived: rapeseed or castor oil bonded with chalk to form the bio-polyurethane structure, with a decorative paper layer between the substrate and the wear surface allowing for unlimited design possibilities, wood-look, stone-look, solid colour, marbled or fully bespoke print.
Verified production credentials
- Approximately 60-70 percent solar production energy from on-site factory solar panels, balance purchased wind electricity. Confirmed by the manufacturer.
- Zero water in manufacture. Confirmed by the manufacturer.
- Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified. Working back to Silver via a recent €300,000 recycling-machine investment to put post-production waste back into the product.
- Multiple independent eco-labels. Blue Angel, GreenGuard, TFI TÜVPROFICERT PREMIUM, FloorScore, M1, A+, EPD, Indoor Air Climate, Eco-construction 2, Austrian Environmental Certificate.

Pendulum Test Value (PTV), UK slip resistance evidence
The Organic range carries documented PTV slip data across all three formats, independently tested. The HSE benchmark for “low slip risk” in commercial settings is PTV ≥ 36. All three Organic formats exceed that benchmark in both dry and wet conditions:
- Plank format: 81 PTV dry / 46 PTV wet
- Tile format: 67 PTV dry / 42 PTV wet
- Sheet (Roll) format: 80 PTV dry / 55 PTV wet
PTV documentation is routed with every specifier quote alongside the BREEAM evidence pack. The combination of R9 (DIN 51130) and verified PTV figures covers UK commercial and HSE specifier requirements for slip safety.
Where Organic is specified
Architect-residential briefs where the client wants a resilient floor without PVC. Education projects where Use class 43 commercial wear and GreenGuard indoor-air evidence are required. Healthcare environments where R9 slip and easy clean matter and the linseed-oil odor of linoleum is a clinical concern. Hospitality and workspace where design flexibility (the decorative paper layer supports wood and stone visuals) is a brief requirement. Listed-building washrooms and kitchens where heritage interiors need a sustainable, low-VOC, easy-to-maintain surface.
What’s different about Organic vs the alternatives
Organic vs PVC-based LVT
Functionally similar (resilient, durable, easy to install, waterproof), but materially different. Organic is bio-based and PVC-free; LVT is petroleum-derived PVC. For projects with sustainability targets the comparison resolves in Organic’s favour.
Organic vs Marmoleum (Forbo linoleum)
Both bio-based, PVC-free, established for UK architect specification. Organic offers a measurable technical performance edge on indentation, impact sound, lightfastness and warranty terms, plus broader eco-label coverage. Marmoleum carries the heritage brand recognition. See the full comparison →
Organic vs traditional carpet tile
Carpet tile is the historic resilient-alternative in workspace and commercial fit-out. Organic resists staining where carpet absorbs it, refinishes whereas carpet wears in patches, and carries lifecycle credentials that compare favourably on BREEAM Mat 03 and Hea 04 specifier evidence packs.
Frequently asked questions
Is Organic the same product as linoleum?
No. Linoleum is built on linseed oil, jute, tree resin, wood and limestone flour. Organic is built on a bio-polyurethane chemistry of rapeseed or castor oil and chalk. Both are bio-based, PVC-free and Use class 34/43. The chemistry, the manufacturing process and the on-site installation experience are different.
Is Organic suitable for wet areas?
Yes, bathrooms, kitchens, hospitality wet zones, healthcare hand-wash areas. The polyurethane surface is waterproof and easy to clean.
What sustainability credentials does Organic carry?
Cradle to Cradle Bronze; Blue Angel; GreenGuard; TFI TÜVPROFICERT PREMIUM; FloorScore; M1 and A+ emission classes; EPD; Indoor Air Climate; Eco-construction 2; Austrian Environmental Certificate.
Where is Organic manufactured?
At a German factory powered approximately 60-70 percent by on-site solar with the remainder from purchased wind electricity. Zero water consumption in production. Full provenance documentation is supplied on request alongside the BREEAM evidence pack.
Can I get samples?
Yes, 48-hour UK-wide sample delivery, up to 10 samples per project, no charge. Send the brief and we’ll match samples to your design intent.
Specifying Organic for a project?
Send the brief and we will return Organic samples matched to your design intent, plus the technical specification data, EPD and BREEAM evidence pack within 48 hours.
