Buyer’s Guide

Best Engineered Wood Flooring UK

There is no single “best” engineered wood floor, the right choice depends on how you live, your subfloor and your priorities. This guide explains what separates a great engineered wood floor from a cheap one, so you can choose with confidence.

What makes a great engineered wood floor

  • Wear layer, the solid timber top layer. A thicker wear layer (3mm or more) lasts longer and can be re-sanded. Thin veneers cannot.
  • Core quality, a stable plywood or hardwood core resists movement and suits underfloor heating.
  • Certification, FSC or PEFC certification means the timber is responsibly sourced.
  • Finish, oiled finishes are easy to repair; lacquered finishes are lower maintenance.

How to choose for your home

For busy family homes, prioritise a thick wear layer and a durable finish. For period properties, choose wider planks or a herringbone or chevron pattern in keeping with the age of the house. If you have underfloor heating, make sure the floor is rated for it (engineered wood almost always outperforms solid wood here).

Our recommendations

  • Winderen, FSC-certified engineered oak with genuine character and a generous wear layer.
  • Vermont, PEFC-certified engineered oak, responsibly sourced and built to last.

Best engineered wood by how you live

For busy family homes, prioritise a thicker wear layer (3mm or more) and a durable finish that shrugs off scuffs. For period properties, wide planks or herringbone and chevron patterns suit the age of the house. For new builds with underfloor heating, choose a board rated for UFH, engineered oak almost always outperforms solid wood here.

Wear layers and grades explained

The wear layer is the solid oak top surface: 2mm suits light domestic use, while 3–6mm lasts longer and can be re-sanded to refresh the floor. Grade affects looks, prime for a clean, uniform board, rustic for more knots and character. Both our Winderen and Vermont collections carry generous wear layers.

Sustainability is part of best

A genuinely good engineered wood floor is responsibly sourced. Ours is available FSC and PEFC certified, increasingly a requirement, not a nice-to-have, on specified projects. See also engineered oak in Scotland and our full engineered wood range.

Specifying the best engineered wood for commercial and public projects

“Best” changes meaning the moment a floor is specified rather than bought. Wear layer thickness governs how many times a board can be re-sanded over its life, our engineered oak wear layer guide explains what to ask for. Certification has to stand up in a BREEAM or LEED assessment, and fire classification needs documenting to EN 13501-1, see Class Bfl-s1 fire ratings explained. Winderen is FSC-certified engineered oak backed by a 25-year warranty; Vermont adds a PEFC-certified hybrid-wood construction engineered for dent resistance in high-traffic hospitality and retail settings.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should the wear layer be? Look for at least 3mm if you want the option to re-sand and a long lifespan.

Is engineered better than solid wood? For most UK homes, yes, engineered wood is more stable, copes better with underfloor heating and humidity, and uses timber more efficiently.

Can engineered wood go over underfloor heating? Yes, provided the specific floor is rated for it. All our engineered oak is suitable for use with compatible underfloor heating.

How much does engineered wood flooring cost to supply and install? The Floor Gallery supplies engineered wood on a supply-only basis, so the price you pay us covers the flooring itself. Cost depends on the range, the thickness of the real-oak wear layer, the board format (wide planks, herringbone or chevron) and the finish, a thicker wear layer and herringbone or chevron blocks cost more than standard planks. Fitting is arranged separately with your own installer, who quotes labour per square metre based on the subfloor and laying method (glued or floating). For an exact figure, send us your area and specification and we will quote the supply cost and arrange samples.
