Chevron is the most architectural of the parquet patterns, precise, directional and unmistakably considered. At The Floor Gallery we supply engineered oak chevron flooring through the Winderen collection: FSC-certified European oak, cut and finished for the continuous zig-zag that defines a chevron floor, on an engineered core for the dimensional stability a modern specification needs.
Chevron vs herringbone, the difference
The two patterns are often confused, but they are cut and set differently. Herringbone uses rectangular blocks laid at 90° to one another, so the ends meet the sides in a broken, staggered weave. Chevron uses blocks with their ends cut on an angle, typically 45° or 60°, so the planks meet point-to-point and the grain runs in a continuous, unbroken line to a sharp central apex. Herringbone reads as texture; chevron as direction. If you are weighing the two, see our herringbone flooring page for the alternative.

Engineered oak chevron, the Winderen collection
Winderen chevron is produced in Portugal from FSC-certified European oak lamellas over a multi-ply engineered substrate. It is available in the collection’s core decors, Pisa, Pebble and Natural, and through a bespoke colour-matching service for projects that need a specific tone across formats. Finishes span natural oils, lacquers and brushed textures, with specifier-grade wear layers (typically 4–6 mm) so the floor can be sanded and refinished across a 60–80 year service life.
- Material: FSC-certified European oak over an engineered multi-ply core.
- Formats: chevron blocks in standard and large formats; plank, herringbone and chevron available across the range.
- Finishes: oiled, lacquered or brushed; greige, natural, smoked and authentic oak tones.
- Performance: underfloor-heating compatible, specifier wear layer, FSC chain of custody.

Specifying chevron
Chevron rewards careful set-out. A few points worth fixing early in a specification:
- Angle: 45° gives a softer, wider chevron; 60° a taller, more elongated point.
- Block size and proportion: larger blocks suit generous floor plates; tighter spaces benefit from a finer chevron.
- Subfloor and UFH: engineered construction handles underfloor heating and moisture movement better than solid, confirm subfloor RH and a bonded or floating build-up.
- Wear layer: match the wear-layer thickness to the traffic class and the building’s refurbishment cycle.
- Setting-out line: relate the central spine to the room’s primary axis or a key sightline, and agree it before installation.

Where chevron works
Chevron suits spaces where the floor is part of the architecture, hospitality and retail interiors, premium and architect-residential schemes, and heritage settings wanting a period gesture in a modern, stable engineered floor. It pairs particularly well with large, open floor plates where the directional pattern can carry a sightline through the space.
