Herringbone Flooring in London
Herringbone is the pattern London designers reach for when a floor has to do the heavy lifting on its own. Specified in engineered oak, it brings that geometry to the open-plan apartments, workplaces and period conversions that define the city’s projects, without the movement that defeats solid timber.
The Floor Gallery supplies herringbone in engineered oak from the Winderen collection, specifier-grade boards milled and graded for a true herringbone lay, held for London architects and interior designers who need a floor with documentation behind it.
Why engineered oak for herringbone
A herringbone floor has roughly twice the number of joints of a plank floor, and every block is laid at ninety degrees to its neighbour. That makes dimensional stability the whole game. Engineered oak’s multi-ply core moves far less than solid timber across seasonal humidity swings, so the pattern stays tight, no opening joints, no peaking, no telegraphing across a large floor.
It is also why engineered oak is the only honest choice for herringbone over underfloor heating. The Winderen boards are UFH-compatible, which matters in London new-build where underfloor heating is now close to standard.
The Winderen collection
Winderen is our engineered oak range: FSC-certified European oak, a real-wood wear layer over a stable engineered core, and a 25-year Floor Gallery warranty. It runs from pale, raw-looking Nordic tones through to deeper smoked and oiled finishes, so a herringbone specification can sit anywhere from a minimalist apartment to a heritage refurbishment.
Because herringbone draws so much attention to tone and grain, seeing the wood in the real light of the space is essential, which is where the swatch box comes in, below.
Specifying herringbone for a London project
A few things decide whether a herringbone floor succeeds:
- Subfloor flatness, herringbone is less forgiving than plank, so the substrate tolerance should be tighter. We can advise on the specification.
- Setting-out, the pattern axis and the perimeter border need to be drawn before the first block is laid, especially in the irregular rooms common to period conversions.
- Underfloor heating, engineered construction plus a controlled commissioning cycle; we recommend fully bonding the floor in UFH installs.
- Acoustic build-up, for apartment schemes the herringbone sits on an acoustic layer that meets Part E, and we can supply the relevant test data.
Large-format herringbone
Large open-plan floors increasingly call for a larger herringbone block, the proportion reads correctly across a big room where a small block would look busy. The Winderen boards can be supplied at block sizes suited to that scale; tell us the room and we will advise.
Swatch boxes, samples and TDS
The Winderen collection is now available as a swatch box, the full range of tones in one box, sent to architects and designers so a herringbone shortlist can be made against the real material and the real light of the project. Alongside it we provide the technical data sheet, FSC documentation and warranty terms that a specification needs.

Chevron flooring in London, alongside herringbone
If you are weighing herringbone against chevron for a London scheme, we supply both patterns and can match them across a project. Herringbone sets rectangular blocks at a right angle for the classic parquet zig-zag; chevron cuts the ends of each board to an angle so the points meet in a continuous V. Chevron reads as the more contemporary, directional floor, and both are available in the same species, grades and finishes. See our dedicated chevron flooring in London page for that pattern in detail.
Our Winderen engineered oak is made in both: herringbone (the Pisa block specified at Stirrups Hotel), oversized herringbone blocks up to 1500mm for larger rooms, and chevron cut at either 30 or 45 degrees. Our BOFA collection offers herringbone and chevron at 600mm in a custom colour, finished with a VOC-free hardwax oil, so the pattern and the shade can both be matched to your scheme. Any of these can be colour matched through our bespoke finishing service.
Samples reach London next-day, and both patterns can be reviewed in person at the Taylor Maxwell flagship London showroom. Request samples or a specification call and tell us which pattern, species and colour you are considering.
Common questions on herringbone and chevron in London
Do you supply both herringbone and chevron wood flooring in London?
Yes. We supply engineered oak and custom-colour timber in both herringbone and chevron, with next-day samples to London and a flagship London showroom for in-person review.
What is the difference between herringbone and chevron flooring?
Herringbone uses rectangular blocks laid at a right angle to form a staggered zig-zag; chevron has the board ends cut at an angle so they meet point to point in a continuous V. Chevron is the more contemporary, directional look, while herringbone is the traditional parquet pattern.
Can I get herringbone or chevron flooring in a custom colour?
Yes. Our BOFA collection comes in herringbone and chevron with custom colour and a VOC-free finish, and any oak floor can be colour matched to a sample, RAL reference or joinery piece through our bespoke finishing service.
