Cork Flooring for Bathrooms

Cork flooring works beautifully in bathrooms, warm, soft and comfortable underfoot, with a naturally grippy surface. The key is choosing the right product: our waterproof Classic Cork has a 100% waterproof core designed for bathrooms, en-suites and wet areas.

It stays warm where tile feels cold, cushions every step, and resists the damp and steam of a busy bathroom. It is sustainable too, carbon-negative, PVC-free and FSC-certified, with commercial-grade durability and up to a 10-year warranty.

Cork flooring, bathrooms

Cork flooring for bathrooms

Cork flooring is now possible in bathrooms at construction level, not just as a surface treatment. The Floor Gallery’s Classic Cork range is built on a 100% waterproof plank system where the plank, core, wear layer and joint are all moisture-tolerant. For the first time since the 1930s, cork is a credible bathroom specification.

Why architects are specifying cork in bathrooms again

Cork was the dominant bathroom floor in mid-century British residential, warm underfoot, acoustically soft, naturally antimicrobial. The 1980s shift to ceramic and stone displaced it for a single reason: standard cork constructions could not tolerate standing water and joint ingress. That problem is now solved.

Our Classic Cork range uses a 100% waterproof plank construction with moisture-tolerant joints. The system is independently rated for wet-area application, supporting residential bathrooms, hospitality wet zones, healthcare hand-wash areas and listed-building washrooms.

What waterproof cork brings to a bathroom brief

  • Warm underfoot. Cork’s natural thermal insulation means the floor is comfortable on bare feet in winter without underfloor heating.
  • Acoustically soft. Cork absorbs impact noise, a real consideration in upper-storey bathrooms above bedrooms.
  • Slip-comfortable when wet. The natural surface texture provides reasonable slip resistance compared to glossy ceramic or polished stone.
  • Bfl-s1 fire rating. The highest residential floor fire grade (EN 13501-1).
  • Antimicrobial. Cork has natural antimicrobial properties from its suberin content, helpful in a wet environment.
  • Carbon-negative EPD. Classic Cork carries a verified -101 kg CO2eq/m2 EPD.
  • FSC chain of custody. Standard, routed to BREEAM Mat 03 at quote stage.

Where waterproof cork sits vs the alternatives

vs ceramic / porcelain tile

Tile is the bathroom default, durable, easy to clean, established. But it is cold underfoot, hard on falls, acoustically reflective, carbon-intensive in production, and a difficult retrofit on existing timber subfloors. Cork solves all five issues while still handling water.

vs vinyl / LVT

LVT competes on water tolerance and warmth but is PVC-based, with end-of-life recycling concerns. Cork is bio-based, carbon-negative and FSC-certified.

vs natural stone

Stone has heritage credibility and longevity but is the coldest, hardest, heaviest option, and the highest embodied carbon. For listed-building washrooms where weight loading or thermal comfort matter, cork is increasingly chosen as the reversible, sustainable alternative.

Specifying cork for a bathroom, what to ask

  • Waterproof construction. Ask for written confirmation that the plank is 100% waterproof at construction level, not water-resistant or treated.
  • Joint integrity under standing water. Specifiers should ask for the joint moisture-tolerance specification.
  • EPD figure. Confirm the published carbon figure and that it is independently verified.
  • Slip resistance. Request the PTV (Pendulum Test Value) for the specific finish under wet conditions.
  • Installation method. Floating click installation or full glue-down, affects retrofit speed and subfloor preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Is cork really suitable for a bathroom floor?

With a 100% waterproof construction like Classic Cork, yes. With a standard surface-treated cork, no. The key is construction-level waterproof at the plank, core and joint, not a topical finish.

Can waterproof cork handle a steam-shower wet room?

Classic Cork handles general bathroom moisture and spillage. For a continuously wet wet room (steam shower, walk-in pool surround) we would recommend a specifier conversation, the floor and the wet-zone substrate need to be designed together. Ask us for a written specification rather than assuming.

How does waterproof cork compare to tile underfoot?

Warmer, quieter, softer on bare feet. The texture is closer to a soft wood than a stone. Most architect-residential clients describe the underfoot experience as preferable to tile in a bathroom.

Does cork stain from bathroom products?

Modern Classic Cork has a hard-wax oil or lacquer finish that resists most bathroom products. Cosmetic spills and hair-dye should be wiped promptly. The construction itself is unaffected.

Can I get a Classic Cork sample for a bathroom brief?

Yes, 48-hour UK-wide sample delivery, up to 10 samples per project, no charge.
