Cork Flooring with Underfloor Heating, Classic Cork Specifier Guide
Classic Cork is engineered to perform with underfloor heating: suitable to 27°C surface temperature, the latest-generation waterproof core handles thermal cycling, and our install recommendation is fully adhered (glue-down), the bonded build-up transfers heat more reliably than floating click and eliminates the micro-movement thermal cycling can cause.
The short version
Compatibility: Classic Cork is suitable for hot-water and electric underfloor heating systems with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.Install recommendation: fully adhered (glue-down) for UFH installations. The bond transfers heat more reliably and removes the micro-movement that thermal cycling produces under a floating floor.Waterproof core: the latest-generation Classic Cork construction has a waterproof core board, supports the wet-zone use cases (kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms outside direct shower zone) where UFH is most commonly specified.
Why Classic Cork suits UFH
Three properties of Classic Cork align with what a UFH system needs from the floor finish above it:1. Thermal conductivity
Cork's structure is roughly 50 % trapped air by volume, which makes it an excellent acoustic and impact insulator, but does mean its raw thermal conductivity is lower than dense materials like ceramic tile. The fully adhered install closes the gap: bonded directly to the screed or subfloor, Classic Cork performs as a continuous part of the floor stack, with heat transfer rated within UFH design tolerances. The 7 mm Classic Cork plank ships with a heat transfer resistance suitable for hot-water UFH up to 27°C surface temp.2. Dimensional stability under thermal cycling
UFH systems cycle the floor temperature daily, on in the morning, off at night, seasonal up and down. A floating click cork plank can pick up micro-movement at the joints over many cycles; over a decade of heating seasons that movement is visible. Fully adhered installation bonds the plank to the substrate continuously, so there's nowhere for the cycling movement to go. The waterproof core board added to the latest-generation Classic Cork construction is dimensionally stable across the relevant temperature range.3. Surface temperature comfort
Cork's low thermal conductivity has a useful inverse property: the surface feels warm to bare feet, even when the UFH is off. The floor doesn't extract heat from the foot the way stone or tile does. In residential bedrooms, hospitality rooms and luxury workplace settings, that perceived warmth is part of the specification value.Compatibility table, UFH systems
| UFH system | Compatibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-water UFH (screed-embedded) | Suitable | Max surface temperature 27°C |
| Electric UFH (screed-embedded) | Suitable | Max surface temperature 27°C |
| Electric foil heating (standard) | Not recommended | Surface temperature control varies; consult our technical team |
| Self-regulating electric (≤ 27°C) | Suitable | Confirm system limit at order |
| Underfloor cooling | Suitable | Bonded install required to manage condensation interface |
Install brief, fully adhered cork over UFH
For Classic Cork specified over UFH we issue a project-specific install brief that covers:- Substrate moisture: ≤ 2.0 % for mineral screed, ≤ 0.5 % for anhydrite
- Surface flatness: ≤ 3 mm first metre, ≤ 2 mm subsequent metres
- Recommended adhesive (water-based, UFH-compatible, low VOC)
- UFH commissioning protocol, cycle up before install, off during install, gradual ramp-up after
- Edge gap and expansion-joint detail for partial-area UFH zones
- Final surface seal touch-up if PTV 36+ is also specified (see PTV on Cork guide)
Where this lands on the BREEAM credit table
UFH-compatible cork pairs well with BREEAM Mat 01 (embodied carbon, cork is −101 kg CO2e/m² net), Mat 03 (responsible sourcing, FSC®/PEFC chain of custody, Exemplary level), Hea 02 (indoor air quality, M1 emissions class, Eco-Institut tested), and Ene 04 (low and zero carbon technologies, the floor doesn't compromise the UFH efficiency in the way some dense finishes do). What we do not recommend
Standard electric foil heating systems where surface temperature isn't actively controlled to 27°C max are not recommended, the foil can produce hot-spots that exceed the cork's specification limit. If the project includes electric foil, talk to our technical team at order stage so we can review the system spec and confirm suitability.Technical Data Sheet
