Our walnut flooring ranges
We offer two real walnut floors, each built for a different kind of project.
Vermont American Walnut (Lively). A real American walnut top layer on a dense HDF core, with a click joint for fast floating or fully glued installation. Boards are 2200 × 270mm and about 11mm thick. It is water resistant for 24 hours of standing water, which makes it a strong choice for busy workplaces, hospitality and retail. It is held in stock in Germany for delivery to UK sites in 1 to 2 weeks, and carries a 25-year residential and 5-year commercial warranty.
Winderen Bay of Fundy. FSC certified black American walnut on our birch-ply engineered build, with a 2.5 to 6mm wear layer, made to order in 11 to 19mm thicknesses. Choose wide planks or herringbone and chevron. Lead time is our standard 4 weeks, and there is no minimum order, so it suits a single residence as well as a large fit-out.
If you want the look of walnut in a resilient or design floor, Vermont Design Amore Walnut and the Organic Collection Napa Walnut give a walnut appearance. Neither is real walnut, so specify them where durability or budget matters more than a natural timber surface.

Is walnut hard enough for commercial floors?
Yes, for most commercial interiors, but it is softer than oak. Black American walnut has a Janka hardness of 1,010 lbf (4,500 N), against about 1,120 lbf (5,000 N) for European oak, so it is roughly 10% softer. In product testing, our Vermont walnut reaches at least 85 N/mm² Brinell, against at least 100 N/mm² for Vermont oak. Walnut works well in offices, hotel bedrooms and suites, restaurants away from the kitchen, and high-end residential schemes.
For heavy retail traffic, or rooms with castor chairs and no protective mats, we would steer you to oak. Vermont oak gives the same build and fire rating with a harder surface, and Winderen oak comes in over 200 colours, including deep walnut tones.
Walnut herringbone and chevron
Winderen Bay of Fundy is made in herringbone and chevron, 90 to 140mm wide and 600mm long, in 11 to 19mm thicknesses. Like our planks, it is made to order on our standard 4-week lead time with no minimum order. It can be floated or bonded, and suits underfloor heating up to 27°C.

Wenge flooring in the UK: reclaimed and old-stock supply
Yes, we can supply wenge flooring in the UK as reclaimed or old stock. We no longer specify new wenge. Wenge (Millettia laurentii) has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1998, mainly because of over-harvesting for timber. Any wenge supplied in the UK also needs careful due diligence on where it came from.
We can still supply limited old-stock and reclaimed wenge, made up through our Winderen manufacturing partner. Because supply is limited, it works best for smaller areas, such as a feature room, stair treads or a single residence. Ask us what is available for your project.
For larger areas, these certified dark timbers give a similar depth of colour:
- American walnut, in Vermont or Winderen, for a rich, warm dark brown.
- Dark-stained or smoked Winderen oak, FSC certified, in over 200 colours.
- Smoked Endgrain blocks, FSC and PEFC certified, for a dramatic end-grain floor.

Walnut in specified projects
35 Grosvenor Street, Mayfair (Studio KKD). Studio KKD designed these modern offices for Flex by Grosvenor and specified Vermont American Walnut across the workplace fit-out. The click construction supports underfloor heating at up to 29°C across the open floor. Studio KKD's associate director James Scott has described the Flex by Grosvenor design approach as the "hotelification" of the office (Mix Interiors).
Cunard Queen Mary 2, ballroom. A multi-species marquetry floor for the ballroom of Queen Mary 2, in maple, doussié and walnut. Dark walnut sweeps around a doussié chevron field, framed by pale maple banding and a central inlaid star. It shows what walnut can do as a contrast timber in a feature floor.

Colour matching and finishes
If your scheme needs a walnut tone on a harder or more affordable timber, we can match it on Winderen oak from a library of over 200 colours. Send us a sample, a paint reference or a joinery finish, and we will make up matched samples before you specify. See our bespoke finishing and colour matching service.
Frequently asked questions
Who supplies walnut engineered wood flooring in the UK for commercial projects?
The Floor Gallery supplies American walnut engineered flooring to UK architects and designers. Winderen Bay of Fundy, in FSC certified black American walnut, is made to order in plank, herringbone and chevron.
Is walnut flooring suitable for offices and hospitality?
Yes. Walnut suits offices, hotel rooms, restaurants and residential schemes. It is around 10% softer than European oak, so for heavy retail traffic or unprotected castor chairs we recommend oak instead.
What fire rating does walnut engineered flooring achieve?
Vermont American Walnut is Bfl-s1 to EN 13501-1. Winderen walnut is Cfl-s1 as standard and reaches Bfl-s1 with our specialist lacquer.
Can walnut engineered flooring go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Vermont American Walnut works with hot water and electric systems up to a 29°C surface temperature, and with underfloor cooling. Winderen walnut is suitable up to 27°C.
Is walnut harder than oak?
No. Black American walnut is about 10% softer than European oak: 1,010 lbf (4,500 N) on the Janka scale, against about 1,120 lbf (5,000 N). It is still durable enough for most commercial interiors.
Who supplies wenge wood flooring in the UK?
We supply limited old-stock and reclaimed wenge on request, best suited to smaller areas. For larger projects, we recommend American walnut, dark-stained or smoked FSC Winderen oak, or smoked Endgrain blocks.
Is wenge an endangered timber?
Yes. Wenge (Millettia laurentii) has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1998, mainly because of over-harvesting. That is why we only supply it from old stock or reclaimed sources.
Can you colour match a walnut tone on oak?
Yes. We can match a walnut tone on Winderen oak from over 200 colours, and send matched samples before you specify.
