Cruise Ship Dance Floor — Winderen Maple, Walnut & Doussie
A multi-species marquetry dance floor for a cruise ship interior — engineered in maple, walnut and doussie from the Winderen collection, with the curved inlay pieces fabricated on a CNC machine to hold the lines under load and at sea.

Three species, one floor
Dance floors on cruise ships have to do two contradictory things. They have to look like a centrepiece — the kind of floor you walk into a room to look at — and they have to survive the kind of footfall that hotels and bars never quite see. The Winderen collection's multi-species engineered plank works for both halves of that brief: real-wood faces in maple, walnut and doussie, on a stable engineered core that holds tolerance through the ship's natural movement. The three species were chosen for tonal contrast. Maple reads almost white under stage lighting and forms the light field of the pattern. Walnut — chocolate-toned and close-grained — carries the dark accent. Doussie sits between them, a warm reddish-brown African hardwood with the kind of natural lustre that picks up colour-changing lighting beautifully. Why CNC for the curves
The pattern wasn't possible to cut by hand to the tolerance the brief required. Curved inlay pieces were drawn in CAD and machined directly on a CNC router from the same Winderen plank stock as the field, then dry-fitted before bonding. The advantage of CNC over template-and-jigsaw fabrication isn't just speed — it's that the joint width stays consistent across the whole curve, which is what makes the eye read the inlay as a deliberate line rather than as four individual pieces of veneer. The in-progress images below show the floor mid-install, with the CNC-cut sections being dry-laid against the prepared subfloor before the final bond. The clean line you can see between species — especially where the walnut sweeps into the maple field — is the CNC delivery. In progress & finished

Why Winderen for marine interiors
Engineered floors made for marine spaces have to handle micro-movement that land-based floors never see. Winderen's construction — a real-wood face on a dimensionally-stable engineered core, with a balance backing — tolerates that movement without delaminating at the joints. The wear layer is sized for commercial life under heavy footfall, which is what a dance floor delivers night after night. The factory holds FSC® chain-of-custody on the timber and ships the Type III EPD with the order — useful for cruise operators tracking embodied-carbon disclosure across new-build interiors.- Range
